Mississippi House Democratic Caucus releases the following statement after the final floor vote on SB 2737:
Jackson, MS - Mississippi has some of the most restrictive voting laws in the nation. While this presents its fair share of issues in a normal election year, in a year where we are facing a global pandemic, our restrictive voting laws are dangerous.
The House has just finished debating SB 2737, a bill designed to delete the option of using an indelible pencil to mark ballots. Both Rep. Summers and Rep. Scott offered amendments in an effort to expand voting options in light of COVID-19 and in general. Rep. Summers’ amendment called for an expansion of absentee voting by allowing any qualified voter to vote absentee if he or she chooses to do so. Additionally, Rep. Scott’s amendment called for expanding polling locations in light of COVID-19 in an effort to reduce the inevitable crowding we will see on and around Election Day. Unfortunately, both amendments failed.
