Jackson, MS - During a historic vote last night, Democrats from the House of Representatives and Senate played a major role in the appropriations of $300 million for the small business relief package of the CARES Act funds. House and Senate Democratic Caucus Leaders Rep. Robert Johnson III and Sen. Derrick Simmons were two of the six conferees. Highlights of the package:
$60 million will be “fast-tracked” to provide immediate relief. Small business owners in Mississippi will receive a direct payment of $2,000 for businesses shut down by forced orders.
$240 million in grant funding opportunities for small businesses of up to $25,000 per grant, with $40 million set aside for minority-owned businesses.
“The Democrats’ primary focus was to ensure that we produced something impactful for small businesses, but specifically minority and disadvantaged businesses. We were able to secure provisions for approximately 30,000 small businesses that suffered a loss as a result of being shut down due to federal, state, or municipal executive orders. These businesses include but are not limited to barbers, cosmetologists, and child care centers. This was a great result for our constituents and a great testament as to what can happen when you have a bipartisan effort working together,” said Rep. Robert Johnson III, House Minority Leader.
