Mississippi House of Representatives COVID-19 Update

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

Jackson, MS - For the past few weeks, we have seen a rise in COVID-related hospitalizations across our state. In the Jackson and Hattiesburg areas, there is concern that hospitals are at or over capacity. If this trend continues, we could see hospitals in other areas of the state begin to be overwhelmed as well. There are currently 113 Mississippi patients on ventilators, which is the highest number we have seen during the pandemic thus far.

The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) believes the increase in cases is a result of people ignoring the social distancing guidelines and other guidelines that were implemented throughout the shutdown. In the areas where spikes are occurring, reports from those areas indicate people are gathering in groups without proper safety measures in place (proper social distancing, face-masks, sanitization, etc.). While businesses have been allowed to open and resume activity, MSDH is asking Mississippians to continue to be vigilant in following the CDC and MSDH guidelines on social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks.

While the summer presents opportunities for us to want to gather, we must remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19. The Mississippi House of Representatives Democratic Caucus encourages all Mississippians to continue to engage in safe practices to help reduce the spread of this virus.
