Jackson, MS - The Mississippi State Legislature reconvened session today at 1:00 PM in an effort to grant CARES Act spending authority to the State Legislature. The below quote can be attributed to Representative Robert Johnson, III. “As legislators, the House Democratic Caucus will continue to work within the legislative process to oversee the appropriation and use of $1.25 billion dollars from the CARES Act. More importantly, we continue to work within the legislative framework because we have assurances from the Speaker and House leadership that the issues we believe are important to our constituents are given top priority, to include: 1. Distance Learning: an aggressive approach to providing Statewide Broadband and a computer or iPad for every student; 2. Enhanced funding for HBCUs where they have been disparately impacted; 3. Objective direct funding for cities and counties; 4. Real Small business assistance; 5. Funding that will help employ more health care workers for underserved areas for contact tracing and more testing; 6. Food Security program assistance; 7. PPE for Corrections Officers and inmates along with more testing. We understand the sense of urgency to respond to our constituents’ needs, and we will act in a swift and efficient manner to ensure those needs are met.”
